About the Storybuilder studio™
The StoryBuilder Studio™ began with a house full of cats, a close-knit family, a love of quilting and giving, and the belief that creativity is a gift from God, meant to be used with purpose.
I’m Marisa — or Ris, like Miss — the designer, quilter, animal watcher, and occasional referee of the assorted creatures who call my yard home.
For years, quilting has been one of the ways I love people. I make quilts for my family, for friends and neighbors, and sometimes for people I may never meet. There is something extraordinary about taking carefully selected pieces of fabric and turning them into something that can comfort someone, celebrate them, or simply let them know they are seen and loved.
A FRAMEWORK, NOT A FORMULA.
The Storybuilder Method™ was created from the belief that creativity thrives when we have room to explore, adapt, and create in our own way.
Mix techniques, fabrics, and ideas throughout the same project—whether that means piecing, appliqué, machine stitching, hand embroidery, EPP, or whatever inspires you in the moment. By giving yourself permission to follow that inspiration, change direction, and explore along the way, quilting becomes less about repetition and more about enjoying the process.
Rather than creating one exact finished design, I create the pieces, inspiration, and possibilities that allow each maker to bring their own imagination into the process. The goal is to stay engaged, keep creating, and finish a quilt that doesn’t end up tucked away in a closet.
My first collection, Front Yard Friends, inspired by the very real cast of characters outside our home: ducks, rabbits, squirrels, woodpeckers, opossums, and the other neighbors who wander through and provide considerably more entertainment than they realize.
Most have acquired names.
Some have acquired personalities.
And a few have acquired rather strong opinions.
WHY THE STORYBUILDER STUDIO™?
I love using quilts to tell a story. A story of how much I love someone, a story of animals, a story of blocks. I remember why I chose those blocks and how I felt when I was making them. The most precious thing we can give someone is our time. Quilting is a labor of love because every stitch carries a little piece of the person who made it.
A quilt can be more than fabric and stitches. It can hold memories, personality, humor, and imagination.
For me, creativity has always been about noticing the world around me — the animals who visit our yard, the moments that make us smile, and the stories we tell because we cannot help but tell them.
The Storybuilder Studio™ exists to celebrate that kind of creativity: the kind that begins with curiosity and grows into something that could only have been created by you.
The StoryBuilder Studio became the perfect home built around the things I love most: creativity, the Creator, home, family, and making things with my hands.
Above all else, I believe that creativity is a gift from God (a small echo of the Master Creator Himself) and one of the loveliest things we can do with that gift is use it generously.
So whether your finished quilt ends up on your own bed, wrapped around someone you love, or given to someone who simply needs to know that somebody cared enough to make something especially for them, I hope these pages help you create something that feels unmistakably yours.
I’ll provide the framework.
You tell the story.
